Ceramic braces have been gaining popularity for years now because of how un-obtrusive they are compared to their metal counterparts.
Ceramic braces are made up of composite materials that can vary in color and transparency. These can be matched to the color of your teeth –or likewise –made fully clear as to make them practically unnoticeable. You’ve probably heard of these types of braces referred to as “clear braces” or “clear ceramics”. Naturally, these are a popular choice for orthodontic braces for adults as it allows us to perfect your smile with minimal (or without any) impact on professional and personal lives.
Now at this point, you may be thinking, “okay, ceramic braces sound great, but I want Invisalign. Why would you still recommend them?”
Depending on the severity of the case, Invisalign might not be an option. While Invisalign can handle standard crowding and gaps in the teeth, they’re not as well suited for cases like severe crowding or oral injuries. Also, ceramics can ironically be less obtrusive to your daily life, as they only require monthly check-ups while Invisalign requires switching out retainers every two weeks. Invisalign also requires more responsibility on the part of the wearer. They must take the retainer out whenever they eat or drink (including water) and be committed to keeping them in for 22 hours out of the day. While you’ll still want to exercise thoughtful care when brushing and flossing with ceramics, being careless with Invisalign (i.e. leaving the retainer out for too long) can lead to the teeth rapidly shifting back to their original state –prolonging the time and cost of the whole affair.
Whatever your choice, the important thing is customization. A treatment plan must be personalized to you and your loved one’s needs. The more aware you are of the options available to you, the more quickly and efficiently we can implement a plan that exactly suits those needs.
