How do Dental Veneers Affect Braces?

November 20, 2015

So, you have dental veneers and you’re contemplating getting braces. You may have heard that dental veneers makes this impossible, or highly complicates the procedure, but orthodontic treatment has come a long way in the past decade.

Dental veneers are thin shells made of porcelain or resin composites that are custom-fitted and bonded to the patient’s teeth. These are for improving the appearance of teeth in many applications, including chipped teeth, root canals or having discolored teeth. Since it’s actually not uncommon for adults to get braces, orthodontists are used to working with patients with these needs. We do however want to be upfront about how veneers can complicate getting orthodontic treatment.

  1. 1.   They Can Make Braces Unattached from The Teeth

For metal and ceramic braces, the materials are designed to bond with your natural teeth (and compensate as they shift into place), since veneers are artificial and static, the bonding process is harder, thus making it easier for the braces to fall off.

We want to stress that this doesn’t disqualify these treatments if you have veneers. What’s likely to happen is that you’ll have to be much more mindful of hard and chewy foods and anything that can place stress on the braces (like sports and instruments you operate with your mouth).

  1. 2.   Are There Alternatives?

While dental veneers can complicate ceramic and wire braces, Invisalign is a near-transparent aligner that is fitted and placed over the teeth. Invisalign has the lowest impact on teeth, and makes the process near-seamless.

No matter your needs, veneers or not, if you’re interested in getting Invisalign or similar treatment, check for Invisalign dentists in Gahanna, Ohio, Westerville, Ohio and Johnstown, Ohio. There’s treatment that will exactly meet your needs. It’s never too late, and there’s no such thing as too old.
