Why Should I Take My Child Back to the Orthodontist for Observation Visits?

September 10, 2019

They say the best way to solve a problem is to prevent it in the first place. At Maple Orthodontics, this means monitoring your child’s growing teeth for signs of future issues that may need orthodontic treatment. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7.

During your child’s first observation visit, Dr. Maple will look for any abnormalities in baby tooth growth or loss. Any new teeth emerging will be carefully evaluated for positioning and health. This gives you and Dr. Maple an idea of whether any future problems may arise.

However, kids grow and change rapidly, and tooth and jaw issues can occur quickly if not caught early. Only by returning for regular observation visits can an orthodontist monitor your child’s tooth and jaw issues. Early recognition can ease corrective procedures and allow your orthodontist to:

  • Guide teeth into proper position
  • Position the jaw for optimal alignment
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem

Continual observation can help identify and correct issues such as:

  • Difficulty chewing
  • Thumb-sucking
  • Crowded teeth
  • Protruding teeth
  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • Teeth grinding

Your child’s observation visits may result in three outcomes: no treatment needed; treatment may be necessary in the future; or, early (“Interceptive”) treatment is recommended. Interceptive treatments such as palate expanding, baby tooth removal, growth modification, or early braces may prevent the need for extended treatment or surgery once your child reaches the traditional age for orthodontic treatment. Interceptive treatment can only be performed if your child is regularly monitored by an orthodontist.

If you’re looking for an orthodontist in or near New Albany to perform observation visits for your child’s teeth, look no further than the “MOC” (Maple Observation Club) at Maple Orthodontics. This program helps monitor progress and eruption of teeth in kids who aren’t quite ready for braces. We make observation fun with an official t-shirt, a chance to write on our giant whiteboard wall, and points which can be redeemed for gift cards. The best part? This program is provided at no cost to you.

At Maple Orthodontics, we believe in optimal tooth and jaw health. The best way to ensure a healthy and straight smile for life is to have your child evaluated early and often to check for any underlying or developing issues. Call us today!
